Even if you fervently disagree with the party bias they tout proudly and often, you probably concur that Democratic political consultants Paul Begala and James Carville know what it takes to craft a winning strategy. In Buck Up, Suck Up... and Come Back When You Foul Up, the two lay out 12 of the rules they developed while separately and jointly masterminding some of the hottest political races in recent years. And with entertaining and enlightening behind-the-scenes anecdotes drawn from both effective and futile experiences along the campaign trail--most notably their work with Bill Clinton during his two presidential terms--Begala and Carville present a practical course that can be followed in business as well as politics. "If the audience you're trying to reach is smaller than the one hundred million voters we spend our time trying to reach," they write, "we believe these lessons are even more important because your target audience is even more sophisticated, even more interested, even more up-to-the-minute."

At first glance, some rules appear blatantly obvious ("Don't Quit," "Turn Weakness into Strength") and some intentionally controversial ("Kiss Ass," "Know How to Recover When You Really Screw Up"). But, in their explanations, the relevancy and potential application of each consistently comes through. For example, in "Frame the Debate," they note how Ronald Reagan controlled the agenda in his 1980 challenge to Jimmy Carter through early attacks on the incumbent's most unpopular policies--showing precisely why "military strategists know that most battles are won ... by the side that determines where, when and how an engagement is fought." Likewise, in "Know How to Communicate," they bring five tips (tell a story, be brief, be emotional, be unique, be relevant) to life by explaining how their use aided campaigns for Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, and others. The result, while perhaps too profane for some and definitely not Republican-friendly despite its grudging acknowledgment of a few masterful GOP performances, is nonetheless uniformly readable and genuinely practical. --Howard Rothman

Fun and fundamental rules

At the conclusion of his lament on life, Ecclesiastes says to work hard, and honour god. Carville and Begala come to the same conclusions by a more indirect route. Beneath the jokes and the outright political bias, are two very clear minds giving very sound advice. The book is worth purchasing for their chapter on hard work alone. It advises no short cuts or get rich schemes. Success requires focus and commitment. The only thing that the authors skate over is a moral purpose. They clearly forgive Clinton for lapses, but they do not forgive politicians - of any side - for abandoning their moral beliefs. Hence I would have liked one more chapter on ethics, but I cannot deny the immense value and wisdom of this book.

Five Stars for Winning in Politics or in Business

Regardless of your personal politics, this is an excellent book which is written in a "to the point" style with content both useful and fun to read at the same time. I couldn't put it down! I read it in the airport and I read it on the plane. I feel that having read this book will make me more effective in managing a political campaign but it also will provide the energy and focus required to develop and expand my law practice. For anyone with an interest in politics, this is a "must read" book. For anyone seeking to build a business or a professional practice, this book is more useful than ninety-nine percent of the self-help, motivational books I have read. I give this book five stars or an A+! Buy it now, read it and give it to your best friend.

Compelling and Informative--an excellent read

I have to admit, I'm usually snobbish when it comes to books purporting to advise me on Better Living. Unless from well-respected holy folks (and even then still), I tend to find these books cheesy--as I often find those people who don't have the sense to at least hide their copy of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
But after reading their book, I really felt that I learned from their experiences. This all happened without being talked-down to, or without them resorting to spacey warm and fuzzy motivational speaker drivel. I felt like I was getting face-time with the bosses, and they were giving me valuable advice--not just shouting down wornout platitudes. And while some people from the Right might be instantly repulsed by the sight of them, they should know that Carville & Begala go out of their way to be balanced, and that the lessons they offer can (and should) be embraced by all.
For those of you considering buying this book, I'd say do it. It's both a down-to-earth and entertaining read.

Like being there through words and pictures

I can't add anymore about content than what has already been said. This is an excellent introduction to anyone interested in the Plate Tectonic history of the Earth.

The narrative along with the excellent images went a long way in helping clarify the dance that the continents have been doing for the last 4.6 billion years.

I kept an Earth globe with me along with several other paleo-maps I've collected over the years. They all helped in keeping track of what the author was refering to in each chapter.

I'm really glad that he took the time in laying out the early part of the Earth's geologic history and made only a fairly brief mention of mans time on the planet. It could have been even shorter that it was, but for the most part he kept it reasonable.

I am a retired USGS Geologist/Scientific Illustrator, and have read and Illustrated many USGS publications. I only wish I could have been involved in the preparation of this book.

A superbook for all of you interested in an easy and well documented book on plate tectonics and the evolution of life. Through their pages you can see how earth and its life change, and compare all the time the ancient geographical position of continents with a present one. A plus is that you can see current photographs of rock formations that in the past conformed ancient Pangea or Gondwana continents.

A unique and compelling history of earth

Although I'm a scientist and I love the outdoors, I had only a rudimentary knowledge of geology/earth sciences before reading this book. Origins interweaves the history of the earth's continents, climate, and the evolution of life, and explains with clarity how they are interconnected. A running theme is that change has been, and will remain, a hallmark of our planet. Continents move. Ice advances and retreats. And life is always adapting.

The issue of man-made climate change is touched upon, but Redfern's primary goal is to elucidate the inevitable longer-term forces at play. For instance, it is nearly certain that Earth will re-enter a glacial period within the next couple of thousand years -- a tiny time frame by geological standards.

But, what makes this book truly compelling is the photography. The author utilizes dramatic landscape (and ice-scape) photography to tell the story of Earth's history. Origins serves as a non-technical science book AND a beautiful piece of art for the coffee table.

And, no, I have no connection to the author. I'm just very impressed with this book.

About the Author

W. James Popham has spent the bulk of his educational career as a teacher. His first teaching assignment, for example, was in a small eastern Oregon high school where he taught English and social studies while serving as yearbook advisor, class sponsor, and unpaid tennis coach.  That recompense meshed ideally with the quality of his coaching.

 

            Most of Dr. Popham's teaching career took place at UCLA where, for nearly 30 years, he taught courses in instructional methods for prospective teachers as well as courses in evaluation and measurement for graduate students.  At UCLA he won several distinguished teaching awards.  In January 2000, he was recognized by UCLA Today as one of UCLA’s top 20 professors of the 20th century.  (He notes that the 20th century was a full-length century, unlike the current abbreviated one.)  In 1992, he took early retirement from UCLA upon learning that emeritus professors received free parking.

 

            Because at UCLA he was acutely aware of the perishability of professors who failed to publish, he spent his non-teaching hours affixing words to paper.  The result: over 25 books, 200 journal articles, 50 research reports, and 175 papers presented before research societies.  Although not noted in his official vita, while at UCLA he also authored 1,426 grocery lists.

 

            His most recent books are Classroom Assessment: What Teachers Need to Know, 4th Ed. (2005) and Assessment for Educational Leaders (2006), Allyn & Bacon; The Truth About Testing: An Educator’s Call to Action (2001) and Test Better, Teach Better: the Instructional Role of Assessment (2003), ASCD; America’s “Failing” Schools: How Parents and Teachers Can Cope with No Child Left Behind (2005) and Mastering Assessment: A Self-Service System for Educators (2006), RoutledgeFalmer.  He encourages purchase of these books because he regards their semi-annual royalties as psychologically reassuring.

 

            In 1978, Dr. Popham was elected to the presidency of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).  He was also the founding editor of Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, a quarterly journal published by AERA.  He has attended each year's AERA meeting since his first in 1958.  He is inordinately compulsive.

 

            In 1968, Dr. Popham established IOX Assessment Associates, an R&D group that formerly created statewide student achievement tests for a dozen states.  He has personally passed all of those tests, largely because of his unlimited access to the tests’ answer keys.

 

            In 2002 the National Council on Measurement in Education presented him with its Award for Career Contributions to Educational Measurement. In 2006 he was awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the National Association of Test Directors.  Dr. Popham’s complete 42-page, single-spaced vita can be requested.  It is really dull reading.

The book was very helpful in making me understand key concepts in the area of class room assessment it's a must for the beginning teacher and the experienced teacher who was a bit fuzzy on these concepts.

Comprehensive Contemporary Theology

Ricoeur's work in the areas of hermeneutics and theology has been invaluable, and the essays contained in this book are particularly poignant and accessible. His work on Memory and Suffering alone make the book an excellent purchase, and every essay attests to the irreducible nature of God, Scripture, and Theology in a way few authors have done. An excellent work.

Narratival Hermeneutics

I am not going to do a chapter by chapter analysis of Figuring the Sacred. Not every chapter was equally good. Some of his musings on Heidegger and Kant were interesting but not germane to narrative theology.

"Philosophy and Religious Language"

"Understanding a text is always something more than the summation of partial meanings; the text as a whole has to be considered as a hierarchy of topics" (Ricoeur 38). This makes me think of chiasms. The structure of a chiasm reinforces meaning. Meaning unfolds from narrative.

"Not just any theology whatsoever can be tied to narrative form, but only a theology that proclaims Yahweh to be the grand actor of a history of deliverance. Without a doubt it is this point that forms the greatest contrast between the God of Israel and the God of Greek Philosophy" (40).

Manifestation and Proclamation

This is the most important essay in the book and the one that causes much offense. Ricoeur opposes a philosophy of manifestation (ontotheology) with a philosophy of proclamation (Yahweh speaks).

Manifestation

The "numinous" element of the sacred has nothing to do with language (49). Another key element is theophany--not moments in the biblical narrative, but anything by which the sacred shows itself (icons, relics, holy places). This means that reality is something other than itself while remaining itself.

There is a correspondence between macrocosm and microcosm (54). This brings to mind the Luciferian "as above, so below" dictum.

Proclamation

There is a rupture--violent in the case of the prophets' war against Baalism--between manifestation and proclamation. The word outweighs the numinous (56). Israel's whole theology--and identity--was formed around discourses.

Per idols and icons: "We may say that within the Hebraic domain they (hierophanies) withdraw to the extent that instruction through Torah overcomes any manifestation through an image. A Theology of the Name is opposed to any hierophany of an idol...Hearing the word has taken the place of vision of signs" (56). God's pesel is the Ten Words. It is the only pesel he commanded.

Communal Readings

In "The 'Sacred' Text and the Community" Ricoeur gives a neat deconstruction of the concept "sacred," especially when applied with a book.

For us, manifestation is not be necessity linked to language. The word 'sacred' belongs to the side of manifestation, not to the side of proclamation, because many things may be sacred without being a text (71)

Ricoeur the Hermeneut

His reading of Genesis 1:1-2:4a is interesting, but more for the method than the conclusions. His essay on the Imagination is quite valuable in showing what "goes on" in a narrative. Many narratives in the Bible, particularly Jesus's parables, employ intertextuality which always forces an expansion of meaning from the text. In other words, it is "an object with surplus value" (152). Assuming that the Holy Spirit didn't write chaotically and randomly, isolated texts are now seen in a pattern and signify something else, something more (161).

Ricoeur then moves to a section on biblical time, which is useful for meditation. He summarizes von Rad, Cullman, and others. I won't belabor the point.

His essay "Interpretive Narrative" offers his famous distinction between "idem" identity (the god of sameness, the god of Greek metaphysics) and ipse identity (the God who is constant to the Covenant). He expands this motif in "Naming God." God's identity is seen in his historic acts.

Conclusion

While magnificent, it is in many ways a difficult read. He assumes a familiarity with Continental Philosophy (itself a daunting task) and even then some essays don't seem to have a point. But when he unloads on narrative he truly delivers.

A philosophical reflection on religious understanding

This book is not an easy read. I found it tough sledding in some places. But it's well worth the effort for those who are willing to stick with it. Written by one of the leading philosophers of the 20th century, it uses both analytic and continental philosophy to plumb the depths of religious thought in an attempt to cast light on the connections between religious texts (the word) and spiritual experience (the sacred). At his best, Ricoeur is brilliant in ways that invite us to go deeper into our traditions and to connect our traditions with our personal experience.
