Tristan has been heard as a piano concerto and as a symphonic poem, and is a fine example of how a single piece can interrogate the styles, expressions, genres and aesthetics of major, often conflictual, trends in European culture. In this book, Stephen Downes begins by placing Henze's Tristan in its wider context and in the context of Henze's compositional output and writings. He considers Henze's description of the genesis of the work by examining row tables and sketches, draft and annotated parts, and a full score with corrections and conductor's annotations. This analysis of form raises issues of genre, harmony and melody, temporality, unity and intertextuality, and places the work in the formal aesthetics characteristic of romanticism, modernism and 'postmodernism'. Key concepts in the critical legacy of Tristan are discussed and the book concludes by considering Henze's later works, placing the techniques and aesthetics of Tristan in the context of the composer's subsequent developments. The book is accompanied by a CD containing the 1975 DG recording of Tristan conducted by Henze.

Eventually Van Hamersveld directed his talents toward creating stunning concert posters promoting shows by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, The Who and more. By the late '60s, John was hired as an art director for Capitol Records where he went on to design 300 album covers, including The Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles, Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones, Skeletons from the Closet by the Grateful Dead, Eat to the Beat by Blondie, and This is What You Want by Public Image Ltd., to name a few. Van Hamersveld's psychedelic renderings, whether for posters or albums, are widely regarded as some of the best of the form, but what readers may be surprised to discover is just how dynamic the rest of his work is; his output as a draftsman, designer and photographer continues to be impressive and compelling.

About the Author
Shepard Fairey rose to fame in the street art community in 1989, when he developed the viral "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" campaign in Providence, RI. Like Taxali, Fairey was heavily influenced by the artists such as Andy Warhol and often incorporates popular culture references in his work. Although he remains deeply engrossed with street art, Fairey has since expanded to oeuvre to include print design and illustration. In 2008, he composed a portrait of Obama that was lauded as "the most efficacious American political illustration since 'Uncle Sam Wants You'" by Peter Schjeldal and was subsequently used as the cover of Time Magazine's People of the Year Issue for 2008.

Maybe Too Sophisticated For Some...

John's personal biography of his works and associations with muscians, other artists and surfers, etc. over his lifetime. I recommend it for those interested in John's career. He is not as well known as a Griffin, or Mouse Studio, or Moscoso. But, he was a force and influence in that world at that place in time.

Love, love this book

If you're interested in art, music and American pop culture, you will love it too. Although it looks like it belongs on a coffee table, beautifully illustrated, this is more than a retrospective on John Van Hamersveld's work. He was there in the early days of the who's who from the worlds of both art and music. The book gives you a first-hand account of hanging out with or working with names like Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Peter Max, and Kiss to name a few. He designed the cover for the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" before albums shrank to CD size and his famous poster for "Pinnacle Hendrix" is instantly recognizable. What a colorful life he led in both California and New York as a designer, a photographer and a teacher. His famous "Endless Summer" poster for the movie of the same name dates back to 1966 and, yet, there it was on the set of a TV show in 2013 looking very much at home in the present.

A must have for all designers and illustrators.

This is a stunning book. As a student of Mr. Van Hamersveld's, at CalArts in the 80's, it is of particular interest. It chronicles the legendary design of one of America's preeminent living designers and illustrators. Taking a journey through the timeline of his work, seeing how he was inspired by the world around him, is nothing short of genius. Personally, his work was inspirational as my teacher, and now, continues to be as I travel through my own career. This is a must have for any designer looking for inspiration on how the past leads to the future. Somehow, his work is more relevant today than ever before, and that means something when you see the likes of the famous Endless Summer poster, the cover for Exile on Main Street or his current work for the Venice Art Walk. A true master. A beautiful book.

Wife Takes Control of Her Marriage, and Turns Her Husband into a 1950's Housewife...

Before Mel and Diane get married, she lays out for him precisely what she expects from him as her partner. Some of her terms seem ridiculous, but he wants them to be together so he agrees. He's hopeful that many of the specifics she'd talked about represent fantasies of hers that will never actually be put into practice. He's quite mistaken.

Diane reminds Mel of his promises to her, and he assures her that he'd meant every word, although he'd hoped that some of what she'd alluded to would never be put into practice. He assures her that he'll keep his word, though, and that assurance is all that Diane needs to proceed with her plans. Initially, all that she asks is that he lets her make all of the decisions, and that he quit his job.

Soon he's completely reliant on Diane financially, his credit cards cancelled, and doing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry while she's at work. Step by step, Mel's surrender to his wife soon has his sweatpants replaced with corset, stockings, heels, and dresses. Mel hates what is happening to him, except for the small part of him that's tenting the front of his panties. His hair is grown out and dyed a platinum blonde, his body hair shaved, his nails perfectly painted. Nanny cams keep watch, ensuring that Melanie keeps busy, and that any inappropriate touching is caught on camera.

The story includes coerced feminization, humiliation, femdom, chastity, and promises of cuckolding to follow, as Diane turns Mel into her submissive housewife. This isn't the story of a philandering husband getting his comeuppance, but rather of a wife creating for herself the life that she wants. There is a lot familiar about this story, but if you enjoy femdom feminization stories that involve a married couple, the story should hit most of your hot buttons. Notably absent, though, is any domestic discipline, which I think would have fit nicely with the tone of the story. Also, as mentioned above, cuckolding is alluded to, but relegated to a future chapter of the story. Despite that, it's still satisfying, and I look forward to reading Part Two.
