Not Wholly Accurate, Not Even Half!

As a person who believes deeply in self-sustainability, environmental responsibility, and simply keeping my home and family healthy, I was really excited to buy this book!
Pros~ It has lovely pictures.
Cons~ #1 ~ Palm wax is Absolutely NOT a sustainable product, and it is 1/3 of the book! Do a bit of research, as I did after reading this book, and you'll find that the palm industry is destroying Indonesia and Malaysia; clearcutting, deforestation, environmental, animal & human rights violations... As far as my research took me, there is no such thing as sustainable palm oil.
#2 ~ The author does not give you an appendix on where to find all these exotic components! It is simply repeated that you can find it 'online'. Thanks for giving me even more work to do sifting through dozens of candle making supply companies, because finding organic candle making supplies is super easy! *sarcasm*
#3 ~ According to this author, colorants/dyes are only available in artificial, man-made, chemical compositions. What? I thought this was a book on natural candle making? I guess our ancestors who lived and learned by candles didn't have natural colorants at their disposal? Where's your research? I'm sure it exists, just do what I paid you for and figure it out, and then publish a book on Natural Candle Making!
#4 ~ Also, there is no mention in the book (or on any of the sites I looked at) as to whether the soy used for soy wax flakes is derived from genetically modified soy, of which so much of American soybeans are! If that is the case, and I think I have a right to know that (as well as for my food thank you very much Monsanto), than the soy is even less natural than the blooming palm!

In conclusion, what a rip. Dear Author, don't publish unless you have checked and triple checked your sources, your history, your appendix, your ethics! How can I respect an author who does such little research in her own field? And guess what, in the end it shows that every candle in the book was actually created by someone other than the author. I guess it's back to good ol' beeswax, unless we kill all of our lovely bees off (You can thank Monsanto for that too!)

Not as in-depth as I had hoped.

I hoped there would be more detailed information on judging what size wick to use. I also wanted more detailed information on using/blending essential oils. What about things like natural spices, i.e. ground cinnamon? Can this be used safely in a candle? I would also liked to have seen more projects for recycled/reused wax from old candles and recommendations when blending different types of wax from these leftover candle bits, especially if making a pillar candle.

About the Author
Prof. Dr. H.C. Hasso Plattner is the chair of the "Enterprise Platform and Integration Concepts" research group at HPI, which focuses mainly on In-Memory Data Management for Enterprise Applications. He is author and co-author of over 50 scientific publications and has served conferences such as ACM SIGMOD as a keynote speaker. He is author of "In-Memory Data Management" and currently serves as a visiting professor at the Stanford University Institute of Design. Hasso Plattner is also a co-founder of SAP AG, where he served as CEO until 2003 and has since been chairman of the supervisory board. SAP AG today is the leading provider of enterprise software solutions. In his role as chief software advisor, he concentrates on defining the mid and long-term technology strategy and direction of SAP.
