Great Resource

I think this is a great tool for new teachers like myself. Buehl tells you the advantages for each method as well as offering ideas for some graphic organizers. We used it in our methods class to improve reading in all class types. I reccommend this book to throw some interactive strategies into your lesson plans!

Ignore the criticism

I believe you can safely ignore the criticism that this book is only good for graphic organizers. I've used and referred colleagues to this book for several years now. What I particularly appreciate about this book is that it's not bogged down with endless research and personal anecdotes. If you've taught for any amount of time and are any good at your profession, you really begin to look for books that get to the point and share things that are practical and useful. This book is just that. There are many good strategies organized in this book for you to use with students.

Green woods and brown shirts

It comes as something of a shock to most people to learn that Nazism grew out of the German Romantic Movement and that, at least initially, it embraced a wide variety of positions considered progressive and environmentally-conscious today. Many people know that Hitler was a vegetarian, but how many know that the Nazis mounted the most effective anti-smoking propaganda campaign ever before the 1980s? How many know that the nature protection and conservation laws enacted in the early days of the regime were, from an environmentalist perspective, the best in the world, and that -- stripped of racist and nationalistic language -- they largely remained on the books after World War II until redrawn quite recently? The Nazis effectively outlawed clearcutting and mandated mixed-species, mixed-age forestry to assure "forests forever;" in the name of landscape protection they outlawed roadside billboards and imposed stringent esthetic standards on new construction; exercising their dictatorial powers, they simply rode roughshod over private property rights in the name of "the greater good." For those familiar with this history, there is an inescapable contradiction between what to many of us are these laudable goals and the horrific behavior of the regime in almost every other sphere. How could a regime that perpetrated genocide on an unprecedented industrial scale and waged unlimited and unprovoked wars of aggression and conquest be so concerned with the welfare of animals and plants and the harmony of the landscape? And what, if anything, does this have to tell us about the purity of contemporary environmentalism?
This book is NOT an introduction to its subject and assumes a prior working knowledge of both National Socialism and its ancestor, German Romanticism. What it does accomplish quite well is to demonstrate that while some elements of early Nazism were authentically "green," as Germany slid inexorably into terror and war those elements were expediently shunted aside. One major factor in this was the exigencies of the war effort, but perhaps even more important was the constant pressure to justify everything in racialist terms. The classic work "Behemoth" by Franz Neumann, first published in 1942, first documented the "polycentric" character of the Nazi regime--a polycentrism that at times verged on internecine warfare (e.g., the "Night of the Long Knives" when the SA was liquidated) but more often took the form of poisonous personal rivalries in the upper echelons of the Party, reflected in the proliferation of bureaucratic apparatuses with overlapping functions, vying with one another for power and the approbation of the Fuhrer. Nowhere is this better reflected than in the practice of Nazi "environmentalism." The book is not an easy read, but if you already know a fair bit, you will emerge from it understanding much better the green/brown paradox of National Socialism and how it bears on environmentalism today.

The perfect cookbook for folks who live alone.

I love to cook and I love new cookbooks. I read a review of this one in our local newspaper about a month ago and I knew I had to have it. From breakfast to desserts, I have found many recipes I want to try.

The book has multiple features that I like. Chief ones are that the recipes call for ingredients normally stocked by cooks who enjoy preparing meals; they can be whipped up in a hurry and microwaved in minutes; and they taste good.
Many of them are prepared and baked in a 16-oz mug. That’s the size of my two-cup Pyrex measuring cup.

To date I have made Quinoa Chile, Crumb Coffeecake, Kale and Barley Soup, Tomato- Couscous- Chickpea Soup, Salmon Chowder, Antipasto Pasta, and Bread Pudding and I’ve had this book less than a month.

I’ve enjoyed each of these dishes. I am recently widowed and this book is helping me to continue to eat wholesome food because it is so easy to “stir it up.”

Great book

My wife and I have already used this book more than any cookbook we have bought in the recent years (and we buy a lot). Recipes are all pantry friendly, especially great for lunches and breakfasts. So much cheaper and healthier and interesting than canned soups, frozen dinners and the like. We bought one each for our single son and daughter in college. They are both using and enjoying their copies a lot, too.

The ingredients are things I have, I don't have to get special foods or spices, I like that it makes one serving and I don't have left overs.

Japan’s suicide phenomenon has fascinated both the media and academics, although many questions and paradoxes embedded in the debate on suicide have remained unaddressed in the existing literature, including the assumption that Japan is a "Suicide Nation". This tendency causes common misconceptions about the suicide phenomenon and its features.

Aiming to redress the situation, this book explores how the idea of suicide in Japan was shaped, reinterpreted and reinvented from the 1900s to the 1980s. Providing a timely contribution to the underexplored history of suicide, it also adds to the current heated debates on the contemporary way we organize our thoughts on life and death, health and wealth, on the value of the individual, and on gender. The book explores the genealogy and development of modern suicide in Japan by examining the ways in which beliefs about the nation’s character, historical views of suicide, and the cultural legitimation of voluntary death acted to influence even the scientific conceptualization of suicide in Japan. It thus unveils the way in which the language on suicide was transformed throughout the century according to the fluctuating relationship between suicide and the discourse on national identity, and pathological and cultural narratives. In doing so, it proposes a new path to understanding the norms and mechanisms of the process of the conceptualization of suicide itself.

Filling in a critical gap in three particular fields of historical study: the history of suicide, the history of death, and the cultural history of twentieth century Japan, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese Studies and Japanese History.

About the Author

Andrew Roberts is the author of Masters and Commanders and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900. His other books include Napoleon and Wellington, Eminent Churchillians, and Salisbury, which won the Wolfson History Prize. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, he holds a PhD in history from Cambridge University and writes regularly for The Wall Street Journal and The Daily Beast. He lives in New York City.

A thorough insight into ID evidence....

It's been a while since we reviewed the first edition of this excellent book- seven years to be precise. It remains a massive support source for those of us involved in adducing identification (`ID') evidence in mainly criminal and some civil proceedings. Jordans have taken over publication and Paul Bogan QC is joined by the distinguished academic, Andrew Roberts, for this new second edition.

This subject area is top heavy with case law and, as the authors observe, the Court of Appeal decisions represent a significant proportion of appellate business so their fair share of unsafe convictions does reflect the special place ID evidence occupies in the investigation and prosecution of crime.

The structure of the books has remained much the same with an introduction followed by Parts on investigation, Trial and Scientific Evidence. What is new is the much expanded text on the psychology of ID evidence, and the changes in Part 1 of the book covering Code D.

The other principal change is the provision of more detailed guidance on the procedures for obtaining evidence of recognition from images. Bogan and Roberts provide an outline of the prospective legislative reform of what they describe as the on-going jurisprudential saga over the retention and use of fingerprint and DNA samples involving unconvicted suspects- as we have seen, this issue will run and run.

The effect of the 2003 CJA on hearsay and bad character have led to the reworking of the main chapter in Part 2 looking at admissibility and exclusion of evidence at trial and this will be of great assistance to Defence Counsel. The digest of recent case law is particularly helpful here.

With the continued advances in forensic science, the law has not stood still so the chapters in Part 3 have been revised. Of significance is the rewritten text of the DNA chapter giving us a greater understanding of the science, the forensic techniques, the statistical analysis of the findings and the potential shortcomings which we have with ID evidence.

As the authors say, the contribution of two minds rather than one, combining academic and practical expertise, gives the practitioner assistance in the original aim of the book which is to provide a better understanding of the law and practice relating to identification.

In just under 600 pages with 18 chapters and six important appendices, the criminal practitioner is given a thorough insight into this area of criminal practice. We said of the first edition that this is a gem of a book for practitioners because it brings together all the difficulties associated with adducing ID evidence on both sides.
