Great Resource

Many students today do not successfully learn their course content. Yet our curricula are largely print-based, and students must develop effective reading behaviors to be successful in school. This book provides middle school and high school educators with the resources they need to meet this challenge: literacy development strategies that emphasize effective learning in content contexts.

I think this is a great tool for new teachers like myself. Buehl tells you the advantages for each method as well as offering ideas for some graphic organizers. We used it in our methods class to improve reading in all class types. I reccommend this book to throw some interactive strategies into your lesson plans!

Ignore the criticism

I believe you can safely ignore the criticism that this book is only good for graphic organizers. I've used and referred colleagues to this book for several years now. What I particularly appreciate about this book is that it's not bogged down with endless research and personal anecdotes. If you've taught for any amount of time and are any good at your profession, you really begin to look for books that get to the point and share things that are practical and useful. This book is just that. There are many good strategies organized in this book for you to use with students.
