must read if you are a planning to implement Oracle Applications on Exadata

Got this book over the holidays. This book is fantastically written keeping Applications in mind. Exadata has so many components, even the best of DBAs at times, find Exadata bit tricky. The author has done a great job - very succinctly written.

This book covers many topics related to running Applications on Exadata which are not covered anywhere, for example: the chapter leveraging Exadata features contains so many useful tips which are not documented anywhere. Sizing Exadata always used to be a secret, the author does full justice in explaining sizing in a lucid manner.

This book covers everything from Exadata basics to advanced topics like Consolidation, Resource Management, Monitoring, Administering, Backups and so on. The author has dedicated one section with sample commands for CellCLI which is really helpful.

This book is very well researched and well presented. I am very impressed the way this book is written, very much focused, to the point, covering everything about Exadata in an incredibly easy to read fashion.
This book is written keeping Applications in mind, It is a must for anyone who is planning to Implement Applications on Exadata. It has so many awesome tips and techniques of running Apps on Exadata which is not mentioned anywhere else.
The best part is this book is not at all bulky unlike other books which make reading scary. Those who are new to Exadata will find this book Extremely useful. It covers everything on Exadata.

You get what you pay for...

I think I have bought just about every 'learning Java' book out there, with limited exuberunce, until this book. The advantage this text has over others is to successfully 'weave' the learning of Java as the chapters progress. Other texts do accomplish this to some extent, but I've never seen this achieved to this degree of balance. This book is a heads down, hands on learning device.

Many books provide a single example that gets more and more complex as the chapters, and (hopefully) your skills, progress. Deitel certainly does this (via an Elevator simulation), but also accomplishes this on many different levels with plenty of smaller programs. Each example is explained *line by line* without exception. Additionally, you are provided with example program output right on the page.

I've noticed many 'learning Java' books show you code snippets and little output if any (e.g. Eckel's book, which I love for other reasons), leaving it up to your imagination to put it all together in the context of a complete program.

This text appears to be prepared for the classroom, from its thorough content (25 chapters, 7 appendices, 1400+ pages, cdrom) and available lab and instructor companion books. There is a nice, effective use of color without being distractive like some other texts I've seen.

The negatives are the length, cost and (ouch) the weight. It is one of the heavier books in my collection, for sure!

To summarize, if you are a C programmer looking to quickly jump into Java, or perhaps a genius with a photographic memory, this may not be your first purchase. If you are a newbie, have limited experience with Java, or have been disappointed with other texts, I think you may find this to be the most complete book out there.

I hate this book

I am a programming newb with a geek streak a lifetime wide. I took a Java class this summer hoping to begin groking the one final frontier of computing that has always eluded me. We used this as the text. As somebody who teaches postsecondary courses in an entirely separate field, I feel this book is not a good first choice for an instructor in comp sci, especially for courses for nonmajors or beginners. The prose is exceedingly dry and longwinded *without real purpose*, and tests even my attention span... which is ordinarily sufficient for a continuous performance of the Ring Cycle. What really hacked me off is the way that the book handles terminology and syntax-- from the very beginning, the code examples often use parallel terms within the code in a way that makes it utterly unclear to the newbie whether they're staring down the barrel of a method name, a parameter/argument, what-have-you, which makes it very difficult to trace the logic of the code and get a good handle on the syntax. I have had far better luck grasping the concepts of Java and programming generally with Beginning Java for Dummies, believe it or not. I am a mature and educated adult actually INTERESTED in this topic and this book was absolutely dreadful to me-- instructors, please do not think you're going to choose this text for the present generation of undergrads and have it be anything but an utter waste of a hundred bucks for them.

Overpriced and uninspiring

The Deitels approach the subject of learning to program in the Java language with all the joy of learning typewriter repair and maintenance. The book reads like a volume on appliance repair with tiny font and cookbook instructions. It is unfortunate that because of its title "How to Program" that instructors choose this thing as a textbook for their courses. If you have to use this book as a textbook for a class, the instructions will correctly tell you how to write programs, but you will get no feel for the language or its possibilities. In the end, this book will turn you into someone who programs by rote memory versus someone who programs with any insight into what you are doing. Might I suggest you supplement this book with the Core Java books by Horstmann and Cornell. Their books are far more readable and instructive, and might I add far cheaper. "Head First Java" is another excellent choice, especially for absolute beginners. I fear that some books by the Deitels, and this one in particular, remind me of an old saying "You might not get what you pay for but you will never get what you don't pay for." This book is an illustration of the first part of that old saying.

Very dense, but full of info

I read this book as part of a course, and I struggled through most of it because of the language. I think the approach is a valid one, and it is something I hope to use in my future classroom. But do not expect to read this leisurely on a Sunday afternoon, this is definitely a dense critical text that requires your full attention to comprehend. I commend the author on sharing his experience in the classroom.

About the Author

Stephen Barnett graduated with a BSc in physics from Imperial College London in 1982 and stayed at IC to study for his PhD under the supervision of Peter Knight, graduating in 1985. He held personal Research Fellowships at Imperial College, Harwell and Wolfson College Oxford and at Somerville College Oxford, where he taught Engineering Science. After a year as a Lecturer at Kings College London he moved to Strathclyde in 1991 as a Royal Society of Edinburgh/Scottish Office Education Department research Fellow. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer and then Reader in 1994 before being promoted to Professor in 1996. He is best known for his work, with David Pegg, on the quantum phase operator, work for which he was awarded the Maxwell Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics in 1994. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1996 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. He is currently a recipient of a Royal Society-Wolfson Merit Award and was awarded the James Scott Prize.

“Wait…KoRn is a satanic band?” That was my initial thought when I found out that Brian Welch had left KoRn. I was confused: it was a song on ‘Issues’ that made me resolve to leave an abusive relationship; it was listening to KoRn that made me want to stay sober. Was I missing something? What happened? I would have given my eye-teeth to have been a ‘rock star’, hugely successful no less, and I couldn’t think of one reason why anyone would want to let that go.

I binge read his first three books over a weekend and what emerged was a somewhat sad, albeit familiar, story of a boy who grew up angry and with poor self-esteem, and by hard work and a stroke of good fortune started his early adulthood with fame and wealth complete with all of the privileges and indulgences that accompany it. He was given the golden ticket only to find it took him to a place that was abysmally void. But, as he was to find out, that was the ride, not the destination. He told his story honestly, and at times allowed stabs of unresolved emotion to emerge above the surface, bearing evidence that this was not an autobiography told in full; this was the beginning.

WMEWO is what happened during the in between, the life he negotiated with his new found Faith. This is how he fought to be a good father, a successful entrepreneur, continue to engage his talent as a musician, and most of all, be a happy person, and how none of that came easy.

I was overjoyed to read about his journey back to KoRn, and the way he can look at his absence not as God taking him away, but as God preparing him to go back. It’s very touching to read the stories of him praying with fans alongside his band mate and brother through Christ, Fieldy. Of course ignorant fans would mock them; it can be overwhelming for those who don’t know to stand in the presence of the Lord.

I appreciate the candor he brings to this book, and that he has retained his humor. He shared some deeply personal stories about financial mishaps and near ruin. The challenges of being a single father to his daughter were heart wrenching, but I couldn’t help but find myself thinking how lucky she is to have a father who won’t give up on her, or their relationship.

His Faith is a driving force for him that he is eager and unashamed to share. Be you Christian or not, reading about his life so far, his ability to fall, to persevere, and to rise again, is admirable.

As for me, I have learned that Brian didn’t have one reason to walk away from a ‘rock star’ life...he had a million. And why he came back was backed by a force far greater than money, fame, and possessions. I love to see life come full circle.

Not that many people lay themselves open the way Brian does. Most people would rather not admit the things he admits, or try to dress them up in some way, knock the edges off to make it more palatable. I so appreciate Brian's writing for this reason. I've read a lot of rock bios and most of the time people can admit to some dirt but rarely take on the emotional tolls they had to pay, the books are written more for entertainment, to gawk inside the life of a celebrity and all the crazy stuff they did, than to be inspired by anything. I like looking into Brian's heart and appreciate his showing it. That's courageous and inspiring in and of itself. He doesn't have to be a superhero with all the answers and everything plastered with a happy smiley face to make this book inspiring. It's inspiring to know you can be in the dirt and cast your eyes to the sky and know something in your heart beyond this human realm is there for you.
I hope Brian keep writing about his maturing spiritual journey so I can read about it while I'm on my own journey.

Head's message to Millennials

I have always loved Korn and when I was selected to review this I was super EXCITED! I have been a Korn fan since I was a little kid rocking out to Shoots and Ladders (I had an awesome older sibling!). Brian "Head" Welch, was the original guitarist for the bad and left the band when he got sober to raise his daughter. The book's main focus is Brian's journey as a new Christian and recovering addict. It is a very down to Earth presentation of the ups and downs that come with turning your life around.

I really did enjoy the book. Head's voice was real, down to earth, and even though he admitted to many mistakes in the book he definitely handled it with integrity. I think that anyone who is trying to turn their life around, a new Christian, a recovering addict, or just your average joe, can benefit from this book. Mainly because when an addict becomes sober and or when a person is trying to improve their relationship with the God of their understanding; it is a difficult road that most give up on before they reach the finish line. Everyone can benefit from hearing an open and honest representation oh what turning your life around is really like! I also commend him for being so open to share it with the world.

I also think that as a millennial, this book is very relate-able. You see Head's daughter (Jennea), went through a lot of similar problems as most of the people in our generation. It is really awesome to see both parties (millennial and parent) taking personally responsibility. I also loved hearing about the mission work that Head and other members of Korn. It is a short read, its a little over 200 pages. But it if you are a reader, you will definitely finish it in a few days.
