To explain which aspects of life in Koryŏ came under attack and why, Martina Deuchler draws on social anthropology to examine ancestor worship, mourning, inheritance, marriage, the position of women, and the formation of descent groups. To examine how Neo-Confucian ideology could become an effective instrument for altering basic aspects of Koryŏ life, she traces shifts in political and social power as well as the cumulative effect of changes over time. What emerges is a subtle analysis of Chosŏn Korean social and ideological history.

Comprehensive, well researched

Deuchler's book is a wonderful examination of the social changes brought about by the adoption of Neo-Confucianism as the ruling ideology of Korea from 1392 onward. Despite her dense writing style (fewer authors pack as much information per page), the work is fascinating and highly readable. My only major complaint is that she focuses almost exclusively on the upper classes, although to be fair, evidence from the lower classes is largely non-existent. I would have also liked to have seen more diagrams, but other people may not find this a problem.

a valiant and attractive attempt at the impossible

What architect or architectural student has not dreamed of writing his or her own quick-reference book? How many of us carry around notebooks crammed with precious bits of information, hard won from years of experience, both good and bad? This book is an excellent attempt to formalize the most important and useful of that information. It's an attractive book printed in four tones with the occasional full-color spread and a "travel guide" feel. I wouldn't call it "pocketable" unless your pockets can accommodate an iPad Mini, but it will ride along very comfortably in a pack or messenger bag.

The author acknowledges the immense quantity of information architects must be prepared to wield on a daily basis. Any attempt at abridgment will invariably leave out some critical piece of information or another. This particular abridgment appears to be best suited to students of architecture, young practitioners, and related professionals such as real estate agents, facilities managers, and the like. While each section contains valuable information architects with more experience will quickly move from this book to the full resources, many of which are identified in the "compendium" section of this book (though strangely the book references old versions of some of these resources).

The inclusion of several pages devoted to hand-drafting implements and methodologies, and the omission of any mention of Building Information Modeling whatsoever is perplexing, particularly for a book published in 2013, but perhaps somewhat understandable given the author's professional academic background. Still, if the author intends to argue that software are tools and that tools should be taught on the job why devote an entire chapter to AutoCAD?

In the end, I'm keeping this book as a really decent resource, but I think such abridgments would be more successful if they were tailored to particular real-life job descriptions (i.e. student, job captain, project architect, etc.).

Really, really useful.

I keep this in my desk, bag, or wherever I'm working. It saves me so much time. There have been several times I with it had more in it, but then it wouldn't be so small and hence portable, present, useful... 90% of the time I'm able to flip right to it. Time will probably come when I have many of these basic answers and standards memorized, but right now It's simply a lifesaver. It won't replace a larger book of standards, but it will save you a bunch of time and effort you would normally spend pulling a big book down and navigating a bloated index. It took me a bit to find this book, because it is the updated version of "Materials, Structures, Standards" by the same author. It's been slightly re-arranged and retitled. I'd expect the re-arranging for a new edition, but not a completely new title. I had to email the author and ask her if she was going to publish a new edition since the old ones are sold out. She pointed me in the right direction and I'm glad she did.

Overall, I'm really pleased. It won't replace a more comprehensive work - it isn't meant to - but it will cover the bulk of the quick questions you should know the answers to by now but don't. Or maybe you can just hand it to your colleague that keeps pestering you with questions like, "how much clearance do I need..." and say "here, buy a copy of this book."

It is the "Cliff Notes" version presenting the "tip of the iceberg " essentials of topics that will require deeper study.
A good starting point, and valuable for that purpose.

A Choose Your Own Adventure (Time) Story in Ooo

Which Way Dude? #1 - BMO's Day Out took me by surprised since it's structured like a Choose Your Own Adventure book. As written by Max Brallier, the title seems to imply that Price Stern Sloan is keeping the door open for creating additional Adventure Time titles in this format. And don't freak out about the cover - the cover was designed to look like an already dog-eared book as is the case with out such multi-path stories.

The lead character of this story is the ever-lovable BMO and we get to dictate his direction as he travels through the Land of Ooo on his own solo adventure. You'll still encounter a bunch of other characters from the Adventure Time show, but on the whole it'll be little BMO trying to find his way.

Overall you are awarded "adventure minutes" to sort of assign a score to your overall journey. You get to keep going through the different story paths in order to experiment with which path will earn you as a reader-player the most minutes.

This is a great book, even if you're not as big a BMO fan as I am.

Fun Read! Great for all ages...

My son is totally into Adventure Time. When I decided to purchase this book, I was looking for a light easy fun read for him to show him I encouraged reading, but not overwhelming him with a "heavy" read.

I have found, for my son, this book was a great way to reward him for staying focused and making Principles List at school! What better way to reward than with a book (video games just rot their brains in my opinion).

Perfect thing for the Tweens in my life

My 13 YO Adventure Time fan was very pleased. She plowed through it quickly, but for the small price she had a lot of fun and I was happy to see her pass it on to a friend to enjoy. The nice size is perfect for an Easter basket, x-mas stocking or for a small gift. Super fun ..I will be buying more of these.

Great set but short and pricey if purchased individually

I got the 3 book set of short novellas and although I loved them, I will say the 3 barely total one full book so I don't understand splitting them up like this except it forces people to purchase tiny little over priced novellas to get the whole story. That said, I got the entire thing as a freebie so I'll shelve that thought for now.

I actually loved the story. The writing is great and I loved the characters of Nicole and Sebastian. Both have been burned bad in past relationships so neither is looking for any kind of relationship. In fact, when they meet at a bar during separate out of town conferences they aren't even looking for a hook up but it turns out that the sparks can not be denied and the agreed upon one night turns into 3. But then life sends them both back home to different cities until 2 months later when Nicole finds a huge surprise in her office.

The two find themselves working together and although Nicole doesn't trust easily she is finally beginning to relax a little, until she finds out what kind of deceit Sebastian is really up to. If that isn't enough, a PR nightmare has them both scrambling to straighten out the lives of their clients at the expense of their own.

I'll definitely look for more from this author but I'll check ahead for cliffhangers.

Nicola and Sebastian meet at a bar and share an intense yet passionate steamy weekend together. Two months later, they meet again but as work colleagues. Neither has forgotten their incredible weekend but will the competition between them burn away or ignite the passion between them?

This was an enjoyable book to read with characters that make you laugh and smile. Although both were competitive, neither came across arrogant. I liked Sebastian: he was cocky and competitive but when it truly mattered he stood up for Nicola. Their passionate moments were intense and sexy. Both have been hurt in the past, but will their past affect their future together? Nice, short book and I would recommend it.

I wasn't aware that this book finished off the love story between Nicole and Sebastian. What a nice surprise. I love this tough and well matched couple, and enjoyed this final chapter of their story.
