Develops melodic and technical independence

The greatest feature of this method book is that it has a series of well-thought-out pieces that gradually lead to technical independence of the hands. As I go through the book with my students, there are approximately ten tunes that get the axe, there are a few printing glitches and compound 6-8 is explained erroneously, but overall, this book is excellent. The book's page-by-page development and systematic organization allows the teacher to easily direct and develop the student's sight reading abilities as well as articulation independence of the hands. The book is a bit thin (about four or five pieces) on triads & chord development, but there's plenty of time for that later. By the time the student completes this book, they've acquired an excellent technical foundation to continue on to 'Minuet in G' and 'Fur Elise.'

About the Author
Constance Staley is a Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, where she has directed the First-Year Seminar Program for nearly 25 of her 40 years in higher education. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Staley is the author of a multimedia training package for first-year seminar instructors, as well as the ground-breaking resource manual 50 Ways to Leave Your Lectern. A well-known name in FYE circles, Staley is a leader in faculty development nation-wide. During a three-year leave from the University of Colorado, Dr. Staley joined an East Coast Fortune 500 company to design and deliver its management and supervisory training. She also represented the university as a Fulbright Fellow, teaching in the former Soviet Union in 1996. Dr. Staley earned a B.A. in education from Ball State University, and an M.A. in linguistics and Ph.D. in communication from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is the author of Focus on College Success, Focus on Community College Success, and Focus on College Success Concise for Cengage Learning, and the co-author of Focus on College and Career Success with Steve Staley.

Really helpful for returning students.

As long as people understand this book is more geared towards people that have not just graduated from high school I think they will find this helpful. If you are simply coming straight from HS you will likely find this material to be common sense. If I had this book when I did transition from the military to college than I would have gotten actual use out of it instead of taking an easy class. This book will give you the basic tools you need to get back into an academic lifestyle. It can be an anxious time for most and this book help alleviate most concerns.
