great literature

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) published this book in 1874. Most of the book is written as a epistolary novel in the form of letters written by the 'me' (Werther) to his friend Wilhelm. This book is typical for the 'Sturm und Drang'-period, which is a type of German literature written mainly in the period 1767-1785. It is a reaction to the rationalism of the Enlightenment and advocates listening to your heart, feelings take precedence.

In this book the student Werther falls in love with Lotte, who looks after her brothers and sisters after the death of her mother. Lotte is engaged to Albert. Werther becomes friends with Lotte and Albert, even though it hurts him that they are engaged. After a while his pain becomes too much and he leaves town, but later decides to go back. I won't tell what happens then because I don't want to give away the ending, but there is a lot of emotions, feelings, hurt and desperation before this book ends.

This version is the translation by R.D. Boyan and was edited by Nathen Haskell Dole. The printed edition has 117 pages, this is 1585 locations in this Kindle version. This book is in the public domain, so even if Amazon does not offer this book in your area, you can still get it for free from several websites. At the moment of writing Amazon also offers this book for free in German. This book is a major literary work, and I recommend it to everyone who loves reading good literature.

Great Kindle Edition

Kindle edition of Werther is relatively free of typos and formatting issues. One small flaw I noticed is the variability of the font used for the dates of Werther's letters. Some dates are bolded (a majority) so when one is not bolded, the reader may be confused. Nothing too bad for a free text, and an extremely enjoyable piece of literature.

A Distant Classic

This is of course a great classic, which had a profound impact on the culture of its time. Sometimes, I truly appreciate great classics, for themselves as works of art, not just as for artifacts of culture. But sometimes, I can't make the breakthrough and get really involved with a work -- I observe it, rather than experience it. "The Sorrows of Young Werther", for me, was such a book. I am glad I finally read it (I have certainly read enough about it, over the years) but I won't do so again. Perhaps if I read German, or perhaps if I were a third as old as I am ----- .

Valuable advice, especially in a tight labor market

I had the pleasure of attending a speech by one of the authors of this book, and was very impressed with the business philosophy and subsequently with the book itself. Any company desiring to remain competitive, and even to excel, in today's excruciatingly tight labor market could benefit from the ideas and concrete, real-life (and very interesting) examples provided. Any consumer can tell a story or two about the very positive or negative image a company projected through one of its employees--the "face" that company presents to its customers, for better or worse. This book is a real wake-up call to industry, and offers substantive advice which can improve any business from the ground up. Greater employee loyalty and enthusiasm, plus the concomitant benefits to customers, could result from implementation of these sound ideas. As a business owner of many years, I recommend the book very highly.

About the Author

Otared Haidar, PhD, Mst, PGDip, DPhil, (Oxon), specializes in Arabic and comparative literature and has taught Arabic language and literature at many institutions. She is a full faculty member in the Islamic World and the Middle East at the Faculty of the Oriental Studies, University of Oxford, where she teaches Arabic and Arabic Media.

Excellent book

While I agree, it could explain some things in more detail, to make them clearer, it is a great book for beginners. The other reviewer said it had no markings, no audio which doesn't make sense to me. First of all, its not a course book, its a grammar book. Most grammar books do not come with audio; none of the McGraw-Hill grammar books for other languages come with audio. They already assume that if you are reading the material and writing the lessons in the book, you already know what the words are, what they mean and how they sound/pronounced. Same for markings; they teach you in most courses from the early beginning stages, here and also in the Middle East, not to rely on markings to learn words. They introduce you to a word once or twice and then you never see the markings again. They do away with them early in language learning so you don't use them as a crutch, because newspapers, books and magazines in Arabic, mostly do not have markings for you to sound out every word, its assumed you already know. I think he was looking for a course book and this isn't one. If you don't know how to read Arabic already, understand some vocabulary and can't figure out how to pronounce Arabic words without markings, then maybe you should wait until you get a little further before you buy this book. If you can't read in Arabic script simple sentences like, "My name is...", "I want this book", or other really simple sentences, you may struggle but I would suggest getting it anyway! If you do, it is a good book for not only picking up grammar but in helping you structure simple sentences and learn some new vocabulary. It also helps you retain words and practice Arabic, by making you write lessons down in the book in ARABIC not English; I love that about this book! That helps you to also, practice your handwriting and thinking in your head on how to structure sentences, in Arabic and get away from English. Pronouns and prepositions is one of the things in Arabic that can give most beginners, frustration and headaches and this book is good at showing you how to use them with example sentences and having you write down sentences so that you can reinforce that in your memory. Great beginner book, and by that I mean, mid-beginner not brand new beginner; it really is worth buying. If you are intermediate or advanced, it will probably be too basic for you but would be great to have as a reference book!

Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Pronouns and Prepositions

I purchased this book as part of the commonly bought together three pack of Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Vocabulary, Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Pronouns and Prepositions and Practice Makes Perfect Arabic Verb Tenses.

As someone who was attempting to learn the language on his own, I found these books to be helpful with providing me with the basics of the language, not to mention providing extra words, phrases and other helpful terms. Plus, getting three 190+ page books for ~$30, it was also a great bargain.

Excellent book for understanding Arabic sentence structure.

This is an excellent book for understanding and practicing Arabic grammar/ sentence structure. It gives thorough explanations and so much practice. Each small activity builds upon the next. This book takes the mystery out of Arabic sentence structure!
