Dare you to put this one down!

I've never understood the public's infatuation with such insipid creatures as Kim Kardashian, Lindsey Lohan or any reality show "personality", when there are plenty of genuinely interesting people to read about. Many of these people are showcased in Christopher Zara's book "Tortured Artists". Did you know that Joey Ramone was born with a phantom twin attached to his spine? I can't say that I did. As an art historian, I felt that I already knew quite a bit about artists and other historical figures, but this book kept me hooked with new nuggets of fascinating information. Also it's one thing to relay these facts; its altogether different to synthesize those facts into an insightful story on that individual and demonstrate how these things affected them and their work. But this isn't dry psychobabble. This is very entertaining reading. Zara's writing style is witty and very relatable, with popular cultural references that are sure to amuse. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time.

I was tired of having nothing interesting to say

I don't know about you, but sometimes I find myself with my "artist-y" friends and other creative types, and while sitting around an open bottle of wine drinking the conversation will inevitably drift to minutaie about various artists. As they go on about a particular influence or major figure in a particular field of music, literature, or art, I find myself grasping for something cool to say about "so-and-so". But really I don't have much to add, regretably, unless "so-and-so's" life was featured late-night on a made for tv movie on Lifetime (just as an aside, to show that I'm not a complete failure, my arcane knowledge specialty is in politics and geo-politics, so watch out when we steer the conversation towards the 1988 Presidential campaign!).

Then along came this great book! It's really one of those books that when you pick it up and start leafing through it you find yourself wanting to read more and more. I'd say that they were like intellectual potato chips, once you read one chapter you're ready to read the next one, and the next. But they're more like intellectual Doritos, because they're a bit spicy and have a great stylistic zing to them that make it seem like you are already friends with the author. Just another fun art-sy creative type sitting around a bottle of wine - only now I have something interesting to say, because I've read this book.

So, if you are interested in pop culture, history, art, literature, or music - you're going to really enjoy this book. If you don't like those topics, well, god help you. You must be an insufferable bore and I pity your co-workers.

Interesting and thought-provoking essays on great artists

I really enjoyed this book a lot. It's a series of short essays about acclaimed artists broken into chapters that categorize their particular angst - bad childhood, unrequited love, drug abuse. It's especially handy to have around if you're interrupted a lot when you're reading as each little story about the artists isn't very long and it's easy to put down and pick back up again.

What this book really did was get me thinking about the link between pain and great art. Would any of these artists trade their "greatness" in order to have a happy life? Was creating art that transcends the ages worth being tormented and miserable during their lives? Would I be willing to experience deep pain across my life in order to produce a work of art on par with the artists listed in the book? I don't have an answer for any of these questions, but they certainly made me pause and reflect.

Also, the illustrations in the book are very fun and really added to the work.

Refusing to accept the inevitability of war, Elshtain, a political scientist who teaches a course on war and peace, disputes theorists from the Greeks to Michael Walzer (Just and Unjust Wars, 1977). Using an impressive range of literary, historical, and mythological examples, she examines the rhetoric and iconography of war. She classifies the assigned or adopted roles of women from Minerva to the Greenham Common women, from Spartan mother to warrior to victim. Finally, she proposes a leap of imagination, a search for new alternatives to the war/peace dichotomy. Elshtain does not argue that the world would be better if women ran it; she does insist upon the responsibility of women and men, as citizens, to reflect on history and experience, to find new forms of civic virtue, and not to leave everything to the experts. From the Homeric warrior to Rambo, from the Spartan mother to the Greenham Common Women, Western paradigms of war have shaped public action and forged male and female identity. In the
beginning, politics was war, and war has always been a quintessentially male activity. War, in fact, has always created the greatest gender gap, with deeply rooted myths of Man as just Warrior and
Woman as Beautiful Soul serving to re-create and secure women's social position as noncombatants and men's identity as warriors.
In this brilliant, startlingly original inquiry, a distinguished political philosopher and feminist demonstrates that the old myths-flattering to both men and women-will not do. They are defied by the reality of female bellicosity and sacrificial male love, and undermined by ambiguous issues-from the role of women in combat, to the moral imperatives of just wars. Finding inadequate the very forms of war discourse, Elshtain shakes us loose from both the institutional language of international-relations and conventional military narrative to open her book to the culture of war as she and
her family experienced it in Colorado during and after the Second World War, thus creating a new genre of the woman's war story. Incorporating a vast range of materials, from history to cultural
anthropology, popular culture, and feminist theory, she then critiques standard political theory from Aristotle to the present and shows how that theory itself constructs a life of collective conflict. By attacking the roots of war in the myths of war, Elshtain lays open the promise of a radical reconstruction of our political order.

An important and urgent introduction

The reviewer below summed up Jean Bethke Elshtain's book concisely, so I will refrain from the repetition. My only comment here is to say that Elshtain's curious omission of the issue of imperialism and colonialism, as well as the issue of race and class (though she does sometimes cursorily include this latter category: class), ultimately detracts from her otherwise clear-sighted and compelling argument. Although Elshtain does openly limit her study to Western texts, political and otherwise, insofar as imperialism and colonialism are integral parts of Western history and self-definition, the omission is critical and not only surfaces glaringly, but also limits her critical models and potentials. As for her treatment of race and class (or lack there of), this too is critical and ultimately undermines her otherwise compelling conclusion (basically, it renders her blind to her own elitism and assumptions; to become the "Chastened Patriot" she wants everyone to become requires certain privileges).

Of course, no one can take everything into account, but the insularity of her study is unfortunate precisely because this is such an important work, especially now, with our so-called perpetual war on terror in full swing. While I do not agree with her conclusions about the possibilities of just-wars and the ideal of what Elshtain calls the "Chastened Patriot," capable of assessing and waging such just-wars, this is an excellent and accessible introduction for any reader who is interested thinking about the politics of war and peace, and their own positions in relation to it.

must read if you are a planning to implement Oracle Applications on Exadata

Got this book over the holidays. This book is fantastically written keeping Applications in mind. Exadata has so many components, even the best of DBAs at times, find Exadata bit tricky. The author has done a great job - very succinctly written.

This book covers many topics related to running Applications on Exadata which are not covered anywhere, for example: the chapter leveraging Exadata features contains so many useful tips which are not documented anywhere. Sizing Exadata always used to be a secret, the author does full justice in explaining sizing in a lucid manner.

This book covers everything from Exadata basics to advanced topics like Consolidation, Resource Management, Monitoring, Administering, Backups and so on. The author has dedicated one section with sample commands for CellCLI which is really helpful.

This book is very well researched and well presented. I am very impressed the way this book is written, very much focused, to the point, covering everything about Exadata in an incredibly easy to read fashion.
This book is written keeping Applications in mind, It is a must for anyone who is planning to Implement Applications on Exadata. It has so many awesome tips and techniques of running Apps on Exadata which is not mentioned anywhere else.
The best part is this book is not at all bulky unlike other books which make reading scary. Those who are new to Exadata will find this book Extremely useful. It covers everything on Exadata.

This book is a must read for application customers. This book contain everything you need to know about Exadata. The author has done a great job of giving real life examples and case studies which makes it easier to relate implementation in your environment. The book has taken some complicated scenarios and terminology and explained it in a very simple manner.
