Tree of Enchantment: Ancient Wisdom and Magic Practices of the Faery Tradition, by Orion Foxwood

In Faery Seership the truths we seek can only be found within ourselves, within nature, and within our relationships to nature. At the center of the Faery Tradition lies the Tree of Enchantment: the symbol for these relationships and for the threefold life of humanity. At each level of the tree, there are attending spirit forces that vary from beings of light to beings of shadow, from the ancestors of humanity to the architects of form and nature, from the destiny of our planet to the creation forces of the universe. The tree's roots grow through the lower world, where all life originates and the dead travel, its trunk and lower branches reach out across the middle world, where elemental forces and the four directions guide us, and its highest branches reach the into the upper world and the Star realm.

Weaving together folk tradition and extensive academic research, Orion Foxwood has created and accessible, beautifully written pathway into the Old Religion of Faery Seership. Based on Appalachian traditions, Wiccan studies, Celtic oral traditions, and the Craft from Western and Northern Europe, The Tree of Enchantment offers the student of Faery Tradition both introductory and advanced visionary practices and authentic tools to learn to navigate the three realms of humanity. With diligence and an open heart, the reader will learn to cross The River of Blood, pass through The Gate of Awakening, and over The River of Stars.

Destined to become a classic...This is a wise and wonderful book to be studied and savored, its teachings and methods diligently applied. -Margie McArthur, author of Faery Healing: The Lore and the Legacy; Wisdom of the Elements: The Sacred Wheel of Earth, Air, Fire and Water; and WiccaCraft for Families: The Path of the Hearthfire

The Tree of Enchantment is a rare and beautiful piece of esoteric writing that is fresh, vibrant, and ready for this age and those to come. It is a true guide for helping mend the rifts and fractures within the self and between the planes of being. -Ivo Dominguez, Jr., author of Spirit Speak, Castings: The Creation of Sacred Space, and Beneath The Skins

I say this with the deepest conviction and without a tinge of hyperbole: Orion Foxwood is a national treasure. His Tree of Enchantment is a brilliant and elegant jewel of modern magical literature and a testament to his genius and insight. -Lon Milo DuQuette, author of Enochian Vision Magick

Review
"The Tree of Enchantment is an important and profound work written by one of the most significant authors of this genre today. This book offers insights and techniques that can come only from deep levels of direct experience and the wisdom that results from personal effort. I highly recommend The Tree of Enchantment" -Raven Grimassi

"In The Tree of Enchantment, my dear friend Lord Orion Foxwood offers a brilliant and inspiring synthesis of the most universal premises underlying the world-views of magickal cultures throughout the world--especially those associated with the realms that in Western tradition are called "Faery." The seed of these precepts is the metaphor of the Tree, with its three components: branches reaching into the World Above; roots delving into the World Below, and the trunk connecting these in the Middle World. Through engaging parables, charts, images and poetry, Lord Foxwood expands and applies this metaphor to all aspects of creation--revealing our own human origins, place, and destiny therein." -Oberon Zell-Ravenheart, author of Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard

"Orion Foxwood is a seer whose message--our human soul and the soul of the Earth are as one--is much needed in these times of change and possibility." --T. Thorn Coyle, teacher and author of Evolutionary Witchcraft and Kissing the Limitless

"Orion Foxwood sees discontent as the prod that sets you on the quest for your divine heritage and purpose. In The Tree of Enchantment, Foxwood offers well-seasoned visualizations and exercises that will open gateways connecting your human self to Nature and to the three dimensions of reality. I recommend this book as a valuable guide to aligning yourself with the Tree in the three realms and, thus, to awakening the creative self that helps you fulfill your spiritual destiny." -Mary K. Greer, author of 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card

"TheTree of Enchantment is a rare and beautiful piece of esoteric writing that is fresh, vibrant, and ready for this age and those to come. It is a true guide for helping mend the rifts and fractures within the self and between the planes of being." -Ivo Dominguez, Jr., author of Spirit Speak, Castings: The Creation of Sacred Space, and Beneath The Skins

"A truly enchanting gateway into a authentic spiritual tradition guided by the spirits, with roots deep in the Earth and a true understanding of the stars. I always learn a great deal from Orion writings and workshops and highly recommend them." -Christopher Penczak, author of The Temple of Shamanic Witchcraft and Ascension Magick

"Orion is smart, savvy, funny, and down to earth with great wisdom

about Witchcraft and Paganism." -Margot Adler, author of Drawing Down the Moon

"The well-being of both humanity and our world requires that we come closer in spirit and love to the earth. The magical and healing power of our incarnations arise not only from transcendental levels but from our roots in the earth, in our lineages, and in our ancestors.  Orion's book provides a powerful path into these roots and then out to the flowering of an eco-spirituality and an eco-magic that cannot help but bring blessings to our planet." -David Spangler, author of Blessing: The Art and the Practice

"I say this with the deepest conviction and without a tinge of hyperbole; Orion Foxwood is a national treasure. His Tree of Enchantment is a brilliant and elegant jewel of modern magical literature and a testament to his genius and insight." -Lon Milo DuQuette, author of Enochian Vision Magick

"In this fascinating and educational work, Orion Foxwood provides a comprehensive course of study that puts new focus on ancient Faery traditions. The book leads the seeker from the seed of The Tree of Enchantment (that seed is universal divine discontent) to the culmination of truth and satisfaction found within each and every one of us. The journey is a true delight, giving new dimensions to ancient traditions. As Orion says: "The Tree provides a clear understanding of humanity's soul experiences in relationship to the soul of the world." Read it; learn; enjoy!" -Raymond Buckland, author of Buckland's Book of Saxon Witchcraft, and The Weiser Field Guide to Ghosts

"Destined to become a classic...This is a wise and wonderful book to be studied and savored, its teachings and methods diligently applied." -Margie McArthur, author of Faery Healing: The Lore and the Legacy; Wisdom of the Elements: The Sacred Wheel of Earth, Air, Fire and Water; and WiccaCraft for Families: The Path of the Hearthfire

Brief Review of Book
By d g fine
Mr. Foxwood's knowledge and experience of the Elementals' world stunned me through his book's detailed and complex insights. For those serious to learn about dimensions and beings ancient or dis or non-carnate, this is a book to purchase and study. It is quite the guide to understanding and experiencing the invisible but omnipresent.
For those who have been blessed enough to have actually seen a faery or one of the Little People and continue to be curious, this book is a must.

very popular with many in the neo-pagan community but is only about average in information. I also always question any author when they have a list of credentials on whether or not they have devoted enough time to a single area before taking off towards another cultural influence and then being so proficient in a short amount of time.

A powerful book, written by a powerful worker. Orion's work is hard won knowledge, shared in a beautifully poetic prose. Deeply challenging, yet easy to understand. This work will open the doors to a more powerful relationship with the seed of magic.

Heart and Soul, by Sally Mandel

Bestselling author Sally Mandel writes vibrant novels peopled with richly-drawn characters whose lives move readers to both laughter and tears. Now she has created a remarkable story about the profound risks that are taken in the pursuit of a dream.

For pianist Bess Stallone, a self-taught musical prodigy from the tough side of Long Island, getting into Julliard was a minor miracle. It just wasn’t the kind of school girls from her blue-collar neighborhood attended. In fact, the only thing Bess had in common with the other Julliard students was her singular passion for classical music, which she could play magnificently. Except in front of an audience. From her first disastrous recital, Bess knew that she would never be good enough for the stage, as her bitter father had been telling her for years. But one willful, determined teacher would change everything.

Renowned virtuoso David Montagnier has already captivated the world. Now he needs a new partner for his two-piano repertoire, someone to breathe fresh excitement into his work. Drawn to her wild talent, David challenges Bess, seducing her with music and offering her a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get out of Rocky Beach. As David leads her from their first terrifying performance in a Harlem church to standing ovations at Carnegie Hall, Bess allows herself to surrender to the joys of life, and to believe in love.

Then the romance crumbles. For David’s brilliance masks the wounds of a tortured genius that may never heal. Forsaken, Bess must make a fateful journey of her own–to search once again for the music missing from her heart.

Resonating with wit, warmth, and profound insight, Heart and Soul is a triumph of emotion, a flawless symphony of realism and romance that celebrates life, love, perseverance, and an enduring passion for music.

From Publishers Weekly
As in her deservedly popular Out of the Blue, Mandel here displays her talent for establishing a strong female lead in an appealing milieu with an equally intriguing love interest. Frank-talking Long Island native Bess Stallone ("no relation") is a gifted pianist, fascinated and formed by music from an early age, but in every other way an unlikely virtuoso. With her difficult family life, wrong-side-of-island provenance and paralyzing stage fright, she's the perfect narrator to spin out Mandel's trademark self-deprecating humor. Bess has gotten into Juilliard and attracted the attention of the brilliant and renowned pianist David Montagnier, who wants her to be his partner at first on stage, and later in the bedroom. In a series of skillful scenes, Mandel takes Bess from down and out to what seems like the life of her dreams. But David, however potentially compelling as a character, remains a gorgeous cipher until the end, while good guy Jake, Bess's high school buddy, is telegraphed too clearly as being the one Bess is destined to be with. Mandel could have written a much deeper book, since both David's past with his tragic mother, Aimee, and Bess's history with Jake would have added weight and balance. The strong supporting characters and an ending that almost satisfies wrap up a package that leaves the reader wanting more. From Booklist
Bess Stallone, a potty-mouthed, big-haired, tough Long Island girl, has a big problem. She's a piano-playing prodigy who vomits or faints whenever she performs for an audience. Deciding to give up, she worries that she'll have to wait tables forever until the gorgeous, rich, and famous virtuoso David Montagnier picks her to be his new partner for his two-piano repertoire. Her extreme sexual attraction to him, as well as his ability to groom her for stage appearances, leads to success and romance until his maniacal dark side manifests. Classical music permeates the story; at one point Bess, who fame turns into a "classical-piano version of Jennifer Beals in Flashdance," says, "I guess music is a kind of sickness, like nymphomania." Although Bess talks like Stephanie Plum and David is just too glamorous for words, they are fully dimensional characters, and although on the surface this looks like a happily ever after Cinderella-type tale, Mandel turns it into a compelling drama of phobias and mental illness. A good read
By ReviewMama
I love this book. I had it in hardcover years ago but since lost it. I've read this book at least 6 or 7 times. As someone that a. loves a good romance and b. plays piano herself, I adored this book. It's funny, uplifting, heartbreaking, and tearjerking all throughout the book. I love it. A good read if you're looking for a quirky romance read but beware, it's a little sad.

I do test these products out myself and give a very honest review. I am one that reads the reviews carefully when making purchases so I appreciate those who take the time to post reviews! If my review has been helpful to you, please give me a "Yes" vote on my review!

All too convenient
By A Customer
Although the vast majority of the books I read are fiction, I also love reading about pianos and pianists. I was delighted to discover this book, which at least purported to be a novel about pianists. Alas, it was not really about piano playing at all. Instead, it was a rather trivial novel about a set of relationships some of which happened to involve piano playing. A novel that really focused on the talent of the heroine would have had to provide more of a basis for her excellence; instead, she emerges as a brilliant pianist almost from nowhere. There is no sense of the sweat and tears of learning to play piano at that level. The only inkling of the scope of the heroine's endeavor comes when we find out that the heroine suffers from intractable stage fright, a fright she overcomes with surprising ease when the perfect partner discovers her.
The romance aspects of this novel are also weak, as is the sense of the passing of time (almost none seems to pass). Solutions to problems--such as the long-term care needs of the father--leap out of the woodwork. Everything comes much too easily to the heroine, including her discovery of the love of her life waiting in the wings (where he has been for 22 years) when her piano partnership ends. Her traumas do not last long, and are all easily resolved, whether by a sudden and surprising injection of money, friendship or love.
Life is just not this easy, and a novel in which it is this easy almost inevitably lacks a sufficient sense of drama to be successful. This novel is no exception.

Another Great Love Story
By Jeanne Anderson
I'm a sucker for a love story. Heart and Soul is just that and it is not a sappy one either. It is about Bess Stallone, a tough Long Island girl who just happens to be a gifted pianoist. She talks with a foul mouth, has a very good sense of humor, you can't help but like her.
David is a virtuoso known throughout the world. He is handsome and very famous, in need of a new partner at the piano. The long and short of the story is that he picks Bess and works with her as they become a pair on stage and off. She is so much in love with him and he her.
It is a story told before of course, girl from the wrong side of the tracks hooks up with the pretty boy. Same old story but this one really will grab you and touch you and also make you laugh. David is a tortured soul who ultimately caves in and falls apart as does their relationship. There are such tender moments though in this story.
Of course there is also Jake, her forever friend and the one who has always loved her since 7th grade and will be there for her at the end when she needs him.
I loved it. If you are looking for a good love story this is for you.

Great guide for restaurant reviews!
By scott@scubacharter.com
This is one of three books we used on our trip in November of 1998. The best part of this book is the detailed reviews of all of the eating establishments. There are a ton of restaurant reviews, and they are very detailed. We found the recommendations to be right on the money. The do it yourself tours and adventures are not as detailed in this book as in the Lonely Planet book. If you're more of an adventurous type, I would recommend getting the Lonely Planet book as well. The combination of these two books would make the perfect guide. You can read all about our trip and how we used these two books in my travel report on Subacharter.com.

Worth buying and reading carefully while planning your trip
By Marco Polo the Cat
Jan Prince's book is dense with well-organized information about Tahiti and her islands. If you read carefully, with attention to her suggestions, you can't fail to find the right island for you, or right combination of islands. Here is what we did, and most came from her book:

We had 10 days and split it as follows: 1st day and night Papeete (plane landed at 4 a.m.). Next four nights in Bora Bora. Next three nights in the Marquesa Islands (Hiva Oa), last night (before plane left at 2 a.m.) back in Papeete. This combination worked out well, giving us a good contrast between the lush and luxurious Bora Bora, and the incredibly beautiful remote island of Hiva Oa, where Paul Gauguin lived out his last years and is buried. Belgian singer-poet Jacques Brell, too.

Everyone said Papeete would not be a highlight, but spending one night there worked out logistically and we got to see the artistan component of the annual Heiva Nui Cultural Festival. The level of the crafts on sale was excellent and better than what we saw elsewhere (all the good stuff had been sent to the festival). Because we landed on July 4th, when we arrived at the hotel we were handed invitations to a bash being hosted that night by the president of Fr. Polynesia in honor of US Independence Day and Tahiti Air's inaugural NY-Papeete flight (which we were not on). All AMericans in town that day were invited, whether tourists or residents, and it was a great party. Dancers from various islands, singers, a spread of salads and perfectly grilled meats. If you are going to be there next July 4th call the US consulate ahead of time to find out if they are going to do a repeat and make sure you get an invite.

The Bora Bora Langoon Resort and Spa was elegant, friendly, beautiful, and pricey. The spa was a treat (facials, massages, wraps) and I recommend making reservations in advance for the treatments you want as they are well booked. My husband got sick on Day 3 and was attended by an absolutely competent Basque-born, French trained female doctor who took the boat to make the "house call," and got him back on his feet in no time (he had a stomach flu). Nest time I think we would opt for one of the other islands Jan describes which are less expensive, less organized in terms of acitivites, but equally beautiful. Most seem to have at least one luxury resort.

From Bora Bora we flew back to Papeete and immediately out to Fatu Hiva, one of the Marquesan islands, and from there to Hiva Oa. A long trip made memorable by the last leg which we made in a small 19 seat prop plane. The plane flew low, over Fatu Hiva's stunning terrain (we could see the aircraft's shadow below us) and then directly into the clouds, emerging to land on Hiva Oa. Wow!

Hiva Oa's only hotel (4 stars) is the Hanakee Pearl Hotel. Small (14 bungalows), charming, and special because of the personal attention the manager and his wife devoted to each guest. The trip to the giant tikis of Puamau was through more amazing, untouched terrain. The Gauguin exhibit and Brell center in town are worth a morning at most (I should have read more gauguin before coming). We did not go Tahuata but should have. The hotel's tiny boutique had the only good collection of Marquesan wood sculpture on the island.

My biggest prolem was figuring out what to do on the day we arrived --just after midnight. And on the day we left -- again just after midnight. In the end we sprung for hotel rooms both days. A good decision, After arriving we had the the luxury of an early morning shower and a few hours of sleep before exploring Papeete. We stayed at the Mandarin, Prior to departure we stayed at the Sheraton (from 3:30 p.m. until midnight), had a great suite (upgraded from an el-cheapo room), and after a lst minute shopping spree, we able to shower, dine and sleep a few hours before heading out.

You can get better prices calling the hotels directly and booking internal flights between islands with Air tahiti via email. The staff person we worked out details with by email was very polite, helpful and efficient.

For those of you who have to keep up with the world just a bit while on vacation, both the Bora Bora Langoon Resort and Sheraton were able to give us an internet modem hookup in the room (pricey but worth while). the Pearl Lodge let us hook our laptop to their modem in the lobby. Before leaving LA we got through [...] (Jan's book has details) a french Polynesian sim card which we slipped into our cell phone. We were available for emergencies, etc., from the minute we landed. All incoming calls on the VINI card were free.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Author and Maryland Institute College of Art professor Brottman (High Theory/Low Culture) challenges the conventional wisdom of her fellow compulsive readers, positing that "while illiteracy is just as dangerous as sexual ignorance, in both cases there's a case to be made for moderation." As the title entendre suggests, Brottman is an advocate of reading for pleasure, but she draws witty and serious ties between literacy and a number of impulses, compulsions and neuroses: voyeurism, celebrity worship, guilt, isolation and "Severe Disappointment with Reality." With thoughtful deference to those "smart, well-educated people... for whom reading is anything but 'fun-damental,'" she cites recent titles challenging the reading-is-good-for-you "superstition" (How to Talk About Books you Haven't Read, Everything Bad is Good for You), mines her own past for tales of reading excess ("I became something of a ghoul myself, buried all day in my bedroom... except to renew my library books") and looks hard at "some of the things literature... can't do." Brottman beats a winding path through library stacks, "ought" books and the virtues of true crime. Of course she rallies for the home team, locating reading's greatest virtue in its faculty for individual self-discovery (not unlike masturbation). With sharp observations, a brisk style and a wide range of topics, Brottman's is a rare feat: a crowd-pleaser that could make converts out of readers and nonreaders alike.

Review
Brottman boldly challenges the current conventional wisdom, expressed in such venues as citywide reading campaigns and the NEA's Reading at Risk report, that reading is an unalloyed good...Citing her own childhood reading obsession, devouring horror stories 'locked away in my attic bedroom . . . avoiding everything I could, except books,' she describes how reading turned her 'from an ordinary, introspective teenager into a barely functional recluse.'... Yet, as Brottman generously shares her own reading obsessions, she subtly challenges us to consider what gives each of us who love to read our unique passion for the written word." -- Shelf Awareness

"The Solitary Vice will make you rethink your own relation to reading. Brottman is wonderful at reminding us what a very complicated act--of fantasy, recompense, adventurism and (sometimes) perversity--reading a book can be." -- Laura Kipnis

"Brottman is an advocate of reading for pleasure, but she draws witty and serious ties between literacy and a number of impulses, compulsions and neuroses: voyeurism, celebrity worship, guilt, isolation and `Severe Disappointment with Reality' . . . With sharp observations, a brisk style and a wide range of topics, Brottman's is a rare feat: a crowd-pleaser that could make converts out of readers and nonreaders alike." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Mikita Brottman is one of us: another victim of the unhealthiest and most solipsistic of media pleasures. In this compelling condemnation of literature, she nonetheless offers us one more reason to pick up a good book--her own." -- Douglas Rushkoff

"Brottman is wonderful at reminding us what a [complicated] act--of fantasy, recompense, adventurism, and (sometimes) perversity--reading...can be." -- Laura Kipnis

"Her book is part provocation, part memoir and part memorable roadmap to some of literature's best." -- Geeta Sharma-Jensen, Milwaukee Journal Sentinal

"Here's a book, from a professor no less, that asks the heretical question: Is reading as great as all those preachy public service campaigns would have us believe? ...But as Mikita Brottman, who teaches literature and college at the Maryland Institute College of Art, acknowledges, she's not against reading. She's for thinking about reading in more complex ways:'It's easy to get into the habit of reading; what's much more difficult is learning to become a conscientious, discerning reader.' The Solitary Vice will help." -- USA Today

"In this compelling condemnation of literature, [Brottman]... offers us one more reason to pick up a good book--her own." -- Douglas Rushkoff

"[Brottman's] erudite and witty new work [is] a wild literary ride [which] challenges the current conventional wisdom..." -- Harvey Freedenberg, Shelf Awareness

I liked it, for all the wrong reasons
By Pierce Timberlake
The solitary vice referred to in the title is reading, not sexual self-gratification, but the association is not accidental. Ms. Brottman seems at first to be implying that the two practices are comparable, but then lets us know that, hey, they're both OK, as long as you're doing it for "self discovery." (In case the connection wasn't obvious enough, the cover art depicts the lower half of a woman's body, dress tucked up high, her hand in her lap -- holding a book. OK, we get it.)

Ms. Brottman starts out by attacking the idea that reading is intrinsically good for you. She makes some very valid points, and her voice is quick, bright, witty. I have a few minor issues here, like when she says that Capote's "In Cold Blood" and Mailer's "The Executioner's Song" don't work for her, because they're too fictional. Huh? Didn't that rural family really get killed by the two drifters? Didn't Gilmore murder the clerk? Then she goes on to say that one of her favorite "true crime" books is Moore's "From Hell." The latter is a graphic novel that presents a highly speculative theory about Jack the Ripper. That "From Hell" is "true crime" while "In Cold Blood" and "The Executioner's Song" are fiction, is mind-boggling. (She also refers to a "dark" version of Hamlet. In contrast to all the light, fluffy versions, I guess. Maybe I'm being overly picky here.)

At one point she presents the reader with a questionnaire. Questions include "Do you ever laugh out loud while reading?" (Yes, for this reviewer, but not in years. Decades.) "Do you every cry while reading?" (No, I only cry in movies, and only then because the contrast between the dark theater and the bright screen stings my eyes. It's pure coincidence that a sappy, sentimental scene is always unfolding when the tears appear.) Five minutes after finishing the questionnaire, I was laughing out loud (first time in decades) while reading Ms. Brottman's breezy, dismissive summary of famous literary classics. Power of suggestion? Maybe, but it really was funny.

My main complaint about the book is that she seems to depart from what I thought was the main point, and go off on lengthy side trips about celebrity confessionals and true crime. These tangents are consistent with the Goth sensibility she ascribes to herself (though she doesn't use the term "Goth"), but I wasn't convinced they had much to do with the book's theme. And then at the end of the book, after telling us earlier that we should only read what we want to read, she gives us the conventional wisdom that heavy, serious books actually are good for us, after all.

For all of this, I give the book four stars, because it both made me think and entertained me. Given her theme -- and her ambivalent attitude toward it -- I'm not sure Ms. Brottman would approve of the reasons for my approval. But that's another story.

Confessions of a book addict
By Eric
It's easy to speak breathlessly about the heady pleasures of reading, but Brottman, for most of The Solitary Vice, anyway, provides a wise corrective. No, she is not completely "against reading", but she does persuasively argue that the act of reading (literature) isn't the intrinsically beneficial, spiritual edifying practice it's often depicted as by overzealous educators. Through both humorous memoir (that this reader related to uncomfortably) and sociological evidence, she effectively makes this simple point and from there suggests some implications for how exactly we might more realistically appreciate the pleasures of the novel.

I only give four stars because the book is, in my opinion, padded with a lot of illustrations and material that only has a tangental connection to the main argument. Nearly half of the book is devoted to the discussion of a few somewhat arcane genres of "low culture" reading - the celebrity confessional, the true-crime novel, the psychological profile - for reasons that are hardly justified (although there are a few weak attempts) in terms of the main thesis of the book. At times these discussions are rewarding, as when her survey of author biographies points out that many celebrated writers of renown (Nabokov, Henry James, etc) were widely considered to be boorish and ironically lacking in self-knowledge, but it's a quirky sampling of topics.

Gossip, gossip, gossip...
By M. A. Beauchamp
Knowing beforehand that this was not actually a condemnation of reading but rather a challenge to conventional wisdom, I expected so much more from this essay, and feel compelled to write a review because of my surprise and disappointment. Neither the table of contents nor editorial reviews make clear that most of this book is devoted to singing the praises of gossip, in one written form or another. The first few chapters however are somewhat interesting and explain my two-star rating. The first chapter relates the author's decidedly strange adolescence spent confined in an attic with books as her only companions; the second chapter deals with book collections and libraries, and readers' various approaches to reading; the third mostly dishes on so-called classic works of literature and may help lighten social pressures to pretend familiarity with books that often are arduous to read and mostly disconnected from current reality (for some reason, mainly that Brottman happens to love his works, Shakespeare is exempt from her otherwise sweeping disapproval). Later chapters however focus almost exclusively on gossip of one form or another. Brottman is adamant that everyone loves gossip; in her opinion, anyone claiming otherwise is either lying or delusional (this is, no doubt, a comforting stance for gossip lovers). One chapter is thus devoted to the wonders of celebrity tell-alls and confessionals (in which category she seems to lump all memoirs), another to unauthorized authors' biographies (the sleaziest, the better), and a third to true crime stories. Brottman is so enamored of gossip that I counted 12 (twelve!) occurrences of the word in one page and ten (10!) more in the very next page. Now, that's a lot of gossip, and a definite lack of editorial guidance. Not long after that, since I clearly was no longer « engaged », I decided to take the author's own word of advice and simply gave up.

Better Than Most Guides
By barbre
Most game guides leave me shaking my head, I mean most of them are just rephrasing of the manual or less information than a simple search can reveal. So, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It starts with a quick setup chapter and then jumps right into some interesting structures for farming. From there it provides useful information with screenshots aplenty. I'm sure the information is available elsewhere, but the book is nicely laid out, contains substantive information and is handy to have around. It mentions 1.9 but without enough to make it more than a gimmick to lure you in so I knock it a star for that. Otherwise, I can say this is one of the few guides I found useful. Good book.

Decent array of Minecraft Guidance for the ADVNACED user, primarily on computer platform (some cross-platfomr transference)
By Jarucia Jaycox
Let me get this out of the way: I Minecraft on xBox One and my iPad.

So it turns out that IF that's the case, this book may not be what you're looking for.

There are a good number of coding tricks and tips that I couldn't do on either of those platforms.

That said, as I moved through the book looking for things I could translate into these other platforms (if you're patient and a true builder of worlds) you can probably get some interesting insights.

I have yet to figure out if I can automate farming or other production on these platforms, but based on what I watch my 6yo and 8yo do, I think I might have the tools to get there.

The one piece of advice that I impressed the kids with was making a light randomizer using pressure plates, pigs, redstone (and cubes) and a glass cage for the pigs. In order to do this I had to work off the image in the book because it doesn't actually spell out directions. If you're looking for step by step, this isn't the book for you. I used other images to inform some others tips I tried including running redstone up walls to connect lights to pressure plates. I hadn't seen my kiddos do THIS yet (though they have an very impressive array of skills with switches, buttons, and pressure plates) so I wasn't sure how obvious it might be to other casual users.

The ADVANCED in the title really means "I, as the author, am making the basic assumption that you, my reader, know the terminology I'm using and have already figured out many of the foundational elements of crafting so I will not hold your hand." This is not meant for readers under the late middle school years.

When I went back to the specs (and looked in the book), I really couldn't find anything that says "Don't buy this if you're looking for pocket edition or xbox edition strategies". As I said, it really isn't geared for that, but SOME of the content is transferable.

Of course my son is BEGGING me to download the computer version so he can record and vlog his Minecraft experience...and this book does tell you how to do that. Though, since he's only nearly 6yo, we didn't go down that path.

In general, I think this book might be frustrating to some who are look for quick tips across platforms, but for the advance user perhaps they would really love it.
