You ever have a nightmare that just seemed real even after waking up? or Am I being Punk'd?

If you read comics during the 90's you may or may not have known about a company called Milestone Comics( now Milestone Media ) who published a superhero comics featuring characters of all racial backgrounds( some simply just liked to lump them in the "it's black guys doing comics so it's black comics" stigma which sadly still happens to this day ), one such character they put out was Virgil Ovid Hawkins aka Static( the Shock part is just a comic title ). He even had his own hit cartoon and his comic not only had superhero adventures put also addressed many other themes that barely get handled today and frankly nowhere near the level of sophistication the Milestone titles did it from coming out of the closet to race relation and ect.

So like myself and others who are fans of either just this character or all of Milestone( or both which is a camp I fall into ) after the shaky time he had during a not well received time with the Teen Titans( sadly that book could just never get out of first gear before, during and after his time on it ) when it was announced that he would be getting a solo ongoing again with the then looming DC relaunch/reboot we were ecstatic to say the least and even willing to ignore fanboy grumblings of why is he getting a book he isn't so special and ect. When the creative team of John Rozum and Scott McDaniel was announced there was mixed emotions from everyone who where waiting for the first issue to drop as Rozum is a Milestone alum and his highly underrated and unappreciated Xombi but Scott McDaniel..........given his style was a weird match up as his style is great for street level heroes like Nightwing Vol. 1: A Knight in Bludhaven who he's arguably most famous for( and I say this as a fan of the man's work ).

Sadly due to editorial interference combined with a whole lot of other backstage things this series was pretty much doomed before the first issue came out( readers of it in single issue form would discover this as each issue came out ) as Rozum was never allowed to actually write and McDaniel and the editor went about to handle the writing duties even though they've never written anything before. That's not to say either man's heart wasn't in the right place but it's baffling at how this can happen to a comic and someone higher up doesn't notice other then it has low sales so it must be canceled even though it's well known a comic with a minority lead who's not a legacy is a tough sell to start with.

For six issues we have a comic that doesn't have a plot or at least a plot that makes sense as I can only say it was like reading a Michael Bay movie in comic form. There's plenty of explosions, something to do with a random clone of his sister, a crooked/undercover cop who was exposed to Joker toxin and a fish gang boss. Also all of his supporting cast from Dakota are gone as it was decided to uproot him to New York so the DCU can have a foothold there( joining Hawkman and Captain Atom there ) Add in that from issue #1 it felt like there was some series that we missed that would have fit between the end of his first series Static Shock Vol. 1: Rebirth of the Cool and this. McDaniel's art is a really bad fit for the super heroics here as a lot of the panels seem muddled and during action scenes it is some times hard to figure out what's going on( and I say this as someone who can follow a Chris Bachalo fight scene ).

Marc Bernardin had the unfortunate task of trying to steer the ship but the book had already been killed a couple issues before his issues came out and the damage had already been done and he had two issues to wrap it up. Extras are character designs by McDaniel with the one addition of a sketch from Jim Lee and that's it, a small here ya go for a sad tale.

It gets weird and messy.

They through is too much for a cold start. As someone who has read most of the milestone series and the Terror Titans, it just didn't seem to stand up. They seem to just throw in Hardware without proper setup or incorporation reminiscent of Samurai Pizza Cats' rescue squad. The action in the artwork is a bit jumbled and confusing. The entire relaunch was poorly executed.
